a 50mm lens is static, you cannot change focal lengths
put your 18-55 on 50mm and imagine you can only shoot with that focal length. That is what a 50mm lens is like. What sets the 50mm apart from the 18-55 is the fact that it is optically superior and it has a much larger aperture
as for portraits, the 50mm f/1.8 is the most economical, but still great lens for that purpose
for lanscapes, you need a wide angle lens. Your 18-55 can do some, but if you want wider, look at the Canon 10-22mm or Tokina 11-16mm
for macro, you need a macro lens. You can get a 60mm macro which can double as a portrait lens
