OK, I was really wanting the RED-COLORED Nikon S8100 but apparently only black can be purchased unless you buy it directly out of Nikon. I decided to go black since I live in Oregon where there is absolutely no sales tax, and Nikon was visiting tax me and add $10 towards shipping. Black isn't all that bad looking anyway but it matches my Cooler Master HAF-X LAPTOP case.
I'm upgrading from a Sony DSC-V1. the dimensions of the Nikon is a locks wider, a hair shorter and about half as thick. The DSC-V1 had a po-pup flash while in the same area as the S8100 so we were used to holding the camera the right way already. For those of you that will can't think outside the box, the best way hold this camera is to make a gun with your left hand, browse pointing up, then bend your wrist and so the gun is pointing to your right, then place the camera in your gun. RTFM. This tip is printed (and pictured) while in the quick start booklet that came with the camera. Once you get used for you to it, you won't mind pop-up flashes at all. The only issue you will get is when your dense friends take pictures of you from it and hold the flash down, certainly not knowing any better.
The downgrade through the S8000's 14 megapixel CCD to your S8100's 12 megapixel CMOS sensor is usually no downgrade whatsoever. Megapixels are just about irrelevant to point and shoot camcorders above 12 anyway, and the photograph quality increase, and low light shooting improvements you get with the CMOS sensor EASILY trump a new 2 megapixel increase. I am excess surprised how good my pictures retain turning out, in all light concentrations.
The 10x optical zoom is good, but what is amazing is the way clean the digital zoom is further than that. I am used to fuzzy or blurry shots when using the digital zoom, but this camcorder somehow gets around that. The keeping the zoom lever forces you to apply your right forefinger instead of your thumb which I'm utilized to. It felt kind of odd to start with, but makes complete logical sense from an ergonomic standpoint when you are holding the video camera properly. On the opposite side, your macro function floored me. For the point and shoot camera, I under no circumstances expected a macro this good. It macro shoots a lot better than my Cannon DSLR. I can rest the lens facing the object I'm shooting and the particular image will still focus good.
The LCD screen within the back is a typical 3" monitor, but a very untypically high level of quality resolution. It has the highest resolution tv screen of any point and shoot i could truthfully find. You can really see the detail of what you are about to shoot with it. It's bright and the colors are accurate.
The 1080p video this Coolpix S8100 produces is preferable to I expected. Far better. You can use the zoom feature while rolling ALONG WITH take stills simultaneously. It also data in stereo sound. Great stuff.
lots of people complained that this camera is still rather too large for their liking. If it had been any smaller that it is these days, you would not be able to hold on to it without accidentally pressing a option or something, and it fits in my pocket perfectly. Those people must have toothpick fingers or don't know that size much smaller than the S8100 really isn't high of an advantage unless you are some kind of top secret spy or something.
The Nikon Coolpix S8100 has the many basic features you would want, more than one that are kind of neat. Manual for the fly brightness, hue, and vividness adjustments is usually handy, the skin softening feature spins your subjects into super models, along with the ISO sensitivity range is above ordinary. It has a wind noise decline option while taking video, and all the features you would use the most are easily and quickly accessible.
i know I'm sounding like a Nikon fanboy now but I'm just so pleased with this camera. The only thing allow me to think of I don't care for is a rubber stop that plugs the USB port for the bottom of the camera. I opt for a flip door, but this is merely my preference.
It comes with remarkably good full version photo editing computer software, and even a panoramic stitching program that I've yet give. The full manual is on a CD that is sold with it though I prefer a book to check out. The start-up speed (power on to photo ready) is just under 2 seconds. Holy cow batman!
One feature that we haven't taken advantage of yet but look really useful doing his thing shooting is the high-speed shooting with five full resolution frames at approximately 10 framespersecond, and a preshooting cache that records as much as two shots before the shutterrelease is usually fully pressed. This will really make it quick to get the action shot you really want. The other feature that I'm very impressed by will be advanced Night Landscape mode which combines a series of five consecutive shots taken at a fast shutter speed right into a single image with reduced noise when taking hand held shots. Dark backgrounds turn out very visible without over lighting the subject. Very cool technology idea.

Should I get a Nikon 55-200mm VR lens or a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro?
To use with my Nikon D40. They cost about the same here. Keener on the Sigma because of the longer range and macro capability...thing is, I dunno if the Sigma has VR or IS or whatever they call it. I know it can be a factor at longer focal lengths. Plus, the macro ability of the Sigma is 1:2 and not 1:1..what does that mean? Thanks in advance!
Answer:
Sigma's version of Image stabilization is OS ( optical stabilization ) The 70-300mm lens from Sigma Doesn't have OS, which is a major disadvantage. When you're zooming all the way to 300mm's, the images will be noticeably blurry. And, you don't want to use higher ISO's to compensate, because the D40 is a mess at those levels.
I would go for the 55-200mm VR i have it, and i love it, Here's an example picture of a bird that i took a few months back with it:
It's a great lens, and the VR is a bonus- you'll miss it with the 70-300. Get the Nikon. Also, Sigma lenses aren't competitors to Nikon's lenses. According to a friend of mine, they say Sigmas are 25% lower quality then Nikkor brand lenses.
