Review Of The High Quality D7000 Digital SLR From Nikon (Part 4 Of 4)
This is the fourth part of my review of the Nikon D 7000 digital SLR camera.
Therefore, one focal lengh will not give the high quality results you are looking for in a range of situations. One solution is to obtain and carry a range of different lenses and some photographers do that. That all sounds rather inconvenient, wouldn't it be better to get 1 or 2 with changeable focal length to make the best of most of the photographs you are going to want to take? A zoom lens does exactly that and the numbers that describe them tell you the shortest and longest focal lengths that they provide.
For example , an 18-55mm zoom lens would be suitable for landscapes and general use; an 18-105 mm zoom lens makes possible some medium telephoto work and taking portraits. A 70 -200 mm zoom lens would be used for portraits and telephoto photography, taking photos of people from a distance for instance. By buying two different zoom lenses with your camera you can have a focal length available for most photographs you will want to take.
It is worth noting that there are single lenses which cover a wider focal length range such as 18-200mm. These tend to be more expensive, but if you can afford it they are well worth considering from the point of view of convenience if you expect to need that range of zoom on a particular occasion.
Summary
The Nikon D7000 SLR camera is a straight forward to use yet technologically advanced camera that can deliver superb results for both photographs and video. With a large range of compatable lenses this is an extremely versatile camera. For the enthusiastic amature intending to purchase their first top quality SLR or the 2nd or 3rd time purchaser seeking a model with more features the Nikon D7000 offers really good value for money. Added to that is that it weighs just 780g including the rechargable battery and SD (secure digital) memory cards.

Answer:
Depends on where and how you are going to do your shooting. Is most of the shooting going to be done "on the wing" or will they be grounded?
How close are you going to be? Are you going to use a monopod or tripod?
A 55-200mm would likely be a good all around lens in many situations and I would assume "on the wing" you will be using a relatively fast shutter speed so camera movement is not much of an issue.d 200mm is also manageable at lower shutter speeds if you've done any kind of photography.
Anything beyond 200mm, IMO you ought to figure on a tripod mount or VR lens. Nikon has a 18-200mm VR, but it's about 700 USD. I'm thinking that might be overkill, but the selling point for me is the zoom-range.
