Answer:
Nikon D3100 with 18 - 55 kit lens seems to be a nice choice.
IMHO 55-300 is not worth $370. I would spend some extra amount and get the 70-300vr instead which is a very nice lens (see the links in the 'Source(s)' section). If you are on budget then get the 55-200vr instead.
Have you considered 35mm f/1.8DX as a second lens? It is very good for portraits and low light conditions.
